This was decided at a meeting of the Hospital Development Society (HDS) chaired by the District Collector, E. Ayyappan. A sub-committee was also constituted to coordinate mobilisation of funds for the project from various sources including the constituency development funds of local MPs and MLAs. The sub-committee would also explore the scope for tapping contributions from sponsors for building the new block. The sub-committee has been directed to engage in consultations with the Cooperation Minister, M.V. Raghavan, to pursue the project. It is proposed to equip the new cardiology block with a TMT room, Echo room and other modern infrastructure. The Hospital Superintendent, M.K. Jeevan, said the proposed cardiology block would have a ten-bedded ICU. At present, the cardiology services at the General Hospital are being provided from a four-bedded ICU and single cardiologist. It is expected that any substantive improvement in the quality of services would be achieved only with the provision of adequate staff at the proposed block. The HDS also allotted Rs. 10 lakhs for purchasing various equipment required by various departments of the hospital. The infrastructure upgradation includes a portable x-ray unit for the operation theatres, automatic ECG machine, shadow-less lamp, nebuliser for casualty services and surgical ortho equipment. It is also proposed to set up a resting room for patients at the Out-Patient wing. The room would be constructed with the help of contributions of sponsors. The HDS also decided to start a medical information centre on the hospital premises to provide details of the facilities being offered at the hospital and to revive the functioning of the canteen.
