Opinion - Letters to the Editor

New railway zones

Sir, — This is with reference to the letter on the reorganisation of railway zones (July 9). The suggestion to form the zones State-wise will create new problems as in the case of inter-State river disputes. The railway network is the biggest factor of national integration and the zonal format is nothing but an arrangement to ensure operational efficiency and economic viability as pointed out in your Editorial (July 9). We have failed to link the rivers and ensure their optimum utilisation and, instead, allowed them to become hotbeds of litigation between States. The Railways too should not become tools of controversy in the hands of selfish politicians. The creation of additional zones will be a drain on the railway finances.

Renga Sankaran,

Periyakulam, T.N.
