Sir, The article by Malini Parthasarathy presents an indepth political analysis pleading for larger autonomy to Kashmir. It is a historical fact that not only Kashmir but many States were carved out by the merger of erstwhile Indian States. Considering the fissiparous tendencies which have created and are threatening to create cracks in the unitary structure of India, the time has come to rethink on the wisdom of continuing with it. Apparently, all the States including Kashmir should be given autonomy so that India can emerge as a federation of States and become the United States of India. Only essential subjects can be retained by the Centre by suitable amendments to the Constitution. K. Ramamurthi, Chennai
