Opinion - Letters to the Editor

A conspiracy

Sir, — The Editorial ``Unity as conspiracy'' (Aug. 6) has exposed the collusion among political parties which appear to be bent on defeating the electoral reforms sought to be effected by the Election Commission in deference to the Supreme Court verdict.

Criminalisation of politics over the years has eaten into the vitals of our body politic. The denial of party ticket to history-sheeters can be an effective strategy in keeping the lumpen elements away. But political leadership fights shy of such a step, apparently for fear of losing the unaccounted and unbounded money pumped in by the underworld dons. It is certainly an aberration of justice that people with a dark past get elected and come to safeguard the interests of the people at large. The declaration of a candidate's assets prior to contesting an election will definitely shed some light on his antecedents, apart from serving as a deterrent against amassing of wealth.
