Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Problems are same

Sir, — I read with interest the two reports by Kalpana Sharma (People and polls: Aug. 30, 31). It seems the people of Kashmir are not interested in the poll process as they are greatly disappointed by their elected representatives. The Government has failed to provide them the basic amenities.

Sadly, this is the case everywhere else in our country. Moradabad, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, has a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims. Export of handicrafts from the town touched Rs. 2000 crores last year. We get electricity for not more than 12 hours per day, roads are in pathetic condition and you have to pay bribe to get your work done in any government department. That does not mean that the people are alienated from the country and will take to arms. Poverty and unemployment are everywhere.

We see reports of starvation deaths in Orissa every now and then. Still the people there are not against the country. We have seen the upper caste people in western Uttar Pradesh preventing SCs and STs from voting in many general elections. Still they are eager to cast their votes.

The problems in the country are the same and the gun is no solution to them.

Amit Mehrotra,

Moradabad, U.P.
