Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Veerappan's power

Sir, — Veerappan has shown his power by getting the Karnataka Chief Minister to dance to his tune, and ending this with the death of the Janata Dal(U) leader, H. Nagappa.

A society that cannot find a means of punishing its criminals will pay the price of having criminals become powerful. We blame politicians and police for their failures, which are many. But recent cases have shown that the tardy criminal justice system ensures that anyone who is powerful cannot be prosecuted since delays will result in favourable witnesses, prosecution or decisions.

Shailesh Gandhi,

Sir, — The Karnataka Government should not have made public the contents of Veerappan's sixth cassette in which he alleges that Nagappa was killed because of the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force's operations.

Making public the contents of the cassette has resulted in violence in Karnataka. By doing so, the Karnataka Government has also tried to shift its responsibility to the Tamil Nadu Government.

R. Radhakrishnan,

Chennai
