Education for harmony

Sir, — It is heartening to learn that all schools and colleges in Mumbai would impart lessons in communal harmony. Violence and terrorism have become very much a part of our daily life. Often we come across such news where an irate mob lynches people and their belongings at the slightest provocation or innocents falling gullible victims to the terror unleashed by militants in different parts of our country apart from Kashmir.

To add fuel to fire, our political leaders excite communal passions in an attempt to grab votes. All this could have a perverse impact on the minds of youngsters who are living in such an environment where hatred, intolerance, bloodshed and caste differences are holding centre-stage.

There is an urgent need to inculcate virtues such as maintaining amity, harmony and treating others as equal without any caste prejudices in young children so that they grow up to be responsible citizens and not turn into rioters or hooligans who bay for each other.
