Letters to the Editor
Sir, Anees Ibrahim was hurriedly relieved from the clutches of law by the United Arab Emirates. The speed with which he was "deported" to Pakistan shows the scant regard we command in the UAE. Never before has an accused in a country with which an extradition treaty is in force, been let out in such a haste. India should follow the Chinese in demanding and commanding international respect and esteem, which comes only out of a country's inner strength.
M. Rajaraman,
* * * Sir, India has failed to get Anees Ibrahim from Dubai. Instead, he was sent to Pakistan to a red-carpet welcome. Efforts to secure Ottavio Quattrocchi required in the Bofors case have also failed in court. We are not able to get any criminal wanted for notorious crimes from other countries. We are not able to get the full support of the U.S. and other countries in preventing cross-border terrorism. All these prove that there is something wanting in the handling of our foreign affairs. The lesson is that we must build a strong nation and make united efforts to show our strength. We must have legal and intelligence wings to deal with the complicated legal system of foreign countries.
