Harassment

Sir, — The drive to detect illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in south-east Delhi is causing great harassment to the genuine Indian Bengali-speaking people hailing from West Bengal. In New Ashok Nagar, adjoining Vasundhara Enclave, there is a sizeable Bengali population that came to the capital in search of jobs. From personal experience, I can say that 99 per cent of the Bengalis among New Asok Nagar's slum-dwellers have come from Maldah and other areas of West Bengal. The men folk work as rickshaw pullers and factory workers, while the womenfolk work as domestic help. The reckless arrests have created a great scare among these people.

Sailendra Nath Ghosh,

New Delhi
