India, Russia call for U.N. role

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW APRIL 10. India and Russia called for reinstating the U.N. as the key player in Iraq. ``The sides stressed the need to restore the leading role of the U.N. in the settlement of the Iraqi crisis,'' the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on a meeting between the Indian Ambassador, Krishnan Raghunath, and the Deputy Foreign Minister, Yuri Fedotov.

The two diplomats "thoroughly'' discussed the situation in Iraq and in the region, as well as "other topical issues of interaction between Russia and India in the U.N. framework.'' It was the second time in one week that the Indian Ambassador met Mr. Fedotov, who oversees the Iraqi crisis in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
