Smoking on trains

Sir, — Many among the travelling public do not seem to care either for the `no-smoking' sign painted in bold letters (with fines for violation) on the AC coaches or the requests of fellow passengers. The TTE and the attendants do not take any initiative to dissuade the smokers as only the security police are authorised to fine them. It is suggested that the authority to fine the smokers be given to the TTEs and the attendants. Or each coach should be provided with security police to keep vigil. Leaflets stating that smoking is prohibited can be distributed. Separate coaches for smokers can also be introduced as in foreign countries.
