Bank of Punjab goes hi tech

NEW DELHI JUNE 19. Idea Cellular Ltd., one of Delhi's private cellular companies, today joined hands with the Bank of Punjab to connect all its ATMs in Delhi and satellite towns by using its advanced 3G compatible GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) technology.

Until now ATM machines used to communicate with the bank's central computer using VSAT technology, but now with the GPRS technology the data will be transmitted "in a more secure and reliable manner besides ensuring faster transactions'' by using Idea Cellular's mobile network, it is claimed.

According to the Bank's executive director, Tejbir Singh, this technological advancement is a step forward for the banking industry and would make ATM operations faster, more cost- efficient, and definitely less vulnerable to external factors.

The Idea Cellular (Delhi)'s chief operating officer, Himanshu Kapania, said his company is the first mobile service provider to launch GPRS technology in India. "We will be constantly upgrading our technology and provide value-added services to out customers and GPRS enabled ATMs is a move in this direction,'' he added.
