Letters to the Editor
Sir, Recent political functions/rallies in Coimbatore prove one point. The politician and the administration are unconcerned about environmental pollution. How else does one view the ugly spectacle of thousands of plastic flags and buntings strung from pole-to-pole and tree-to-tree during these events? Post-event, these flags either litter the streets or blow forlornly in the breeze. One is not sure if these flags meet the 20 micron minimum of plastic carry bags. One is not even sure if any norm exists for party decorative plastics. Surely, the quiet and unmourned demise of the proposed "ban on plastics" in Tamil Nadu, the brazen "whitewashing" of multi-coloured plastic carry bags by introducing colourless ones and the increasing resort to plastic party flags by political parties say it all.
