Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswati's initiative to resolve the Ayodhya issue ( June 24 ). The issue is being politicised and suggestions are being given complicating the matter further. No Hindu would ever want to pull down a place of worship of other religion. So also, no Muslim will be allowed to perform `namaz' (prayer) at a desecrated place. This has been confirmed by all clergies in Mecca. If it is established that there was no pre-existing temple after exhausting all means like carbon dating of the findings after digging up the place, then no temple can be built in place of a mosque. So too, if there were indeed a temple, then the dispute is over. Let there be a temple. Even if there is a compromise, then let the disputed place remain as it is so that future generations will learn a lesson from it. S.M. Acharya, Pune * * * Sir, This is with reference to your Editorial, "Abdicating responsibility?" ( June 24 ). More than anything else, the Ramjanmabhoomi - Babri Masjid dispute has made a dent on India's image as a secular and tolerant nation. Still our leaders keep it very much a live issue in order to stoke fires of communal conflict as and when necessary for getting political mileage out of it. G. David Milton, Kanyakumari, T.N. * * * Sir, The Ayodhya dispute has become a perennial problem and it is the nucleus for every communal clash that has happened in the country for the past two decades. If this problem had not been there, the country would have prospered in a speedy way and would have had a better say in international issues. For Indian Muslims, in particular, it affected their progress in education and economic growth significantly. K.M. Abul Hasan, Erode, T.N. * * * Sir, The role being played by the Kanchi Acharya in the Ayodhya issue deserves appreciation. The seer is able to spare time for meeting political and religious leaders to find a permanent solution. Many long-pending issues were solved more by religious leaders than political leaders in the years gone-by. It is, therefore, hoped that our leaders would cooperate in finding out a solution acceptable to all. S. Janakiraman, Coimbatore, T.N.
