Disclosing this here on Wednesday at an impromptu press conference, the Minister for School Education, Mandava Venkateswara Rao, said the counselling for promotions and transfers of teachers could not be taken up during summer holidays due to some administrative reasons. Mr. Rao said that several teachers' associations were requesting the Government to consider lifting the ban on inter-district transfer of teachers. The Government would discuss this issue threadbare with the associations, the all-party committee and also put the matter for discussion in the Assembly. The associations placed a request to consider the transfer of at least a few special cases including wife-and-husband cases, transfer on health grounds and a few other special circumstances, he observed. He attributed the delay in the printing of textbooks to the delayed supply of newsprint owing to the transport operators' strike this year. He, however, said that steps were being taken to supply the books by the end of this month. To a query on the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in some aided schools without permission from the Government or the District Educational Officer (DEO), the Minister said that action would be initiated against all those responsible for such irregularities.
