Letters to the Editor
Sir, While it may be true that justice has been denied, the common man is jubilant at the verdict, after having suffered at the hands of lazy, merciless and corrupt Government officials for decades. We look forward to more such verdicts so that the Government servants will realise for the first time that they are not "masters". A visible change has already been achieved in Andhra Pradesh, where for the first time, visitors to Government offices are being greeted and offered seats by the officials. The time has come for their brothers and sisters in Tamil Nadu to adopt a people-friendly attitude to deserve some sympathy in times of their strife.
P. Balakrishna,
Sir, Your Editorial would have been lauded as appropriate if it had appeared when the country had a socialistic mind-set and many believed that workers had an inherent right to strike work. Chief Justice B. Subhashan Reddy himself has said that the court was not a mere court of law but a court of justice too. Often these two are thought to be different. High Courts are courts of law that deliver justice within law. The ESMA, although in force for a long time, has not been struck down as ultra vires of the Constitution. Justice has been delivered upholding the view that Government servants and teachers have no right to strike work. This judgment has vindicated public opinion. Justice has been done to the efforts to usher in productive work culture and to efforts to ensure peaceful functioning by all sectors of workers.
