Electoral tie-up

Sir, — The CPI (M)'s response to the Congress' call for an electoral tie-up with regional parties is unhealthy. Once, when the Congress was powerful, the CPI (M) had even partially supported the BJP. Later when it saw that the BJP was becoming stronger it dubbed the party as the `first enemy'. For the last few years the Left has been joining hands with the Congress on many national issues. Then why cannot they have an electoral understanding?

The CPI (M) should realise the hard reality that the "third front" will not work.

Sir, — I am glad to note that the Congress has realised that coalition Governments are inevitable both at the Centre and in the States. It is the duty of all secular parties to see that the anti-BJP vote is not divided.

The CPI (M) prefers the Congress to the BJP and has hopes of reviving the `third front'. But all the other parties do not have a national outlook and appear to be opportunistic. Hence the `third front' may not materialise. Since the Left cannot win without support from other parties, it should form an anti-BJP front.
