Two `dry' trees removed

By Our Staff Reporter

Chennai. July 13. Two `dry' trees on Besant Avenue, near the Avvai Illam school, were today removed by the Corporation authorities. The cutting work began late last night and it went on till this evening.

The authorities said complaints about the branches of two trees falling came in October last. Instead of removing them immediately, they waited for sometime to check whether there was any growth in the trees. However, it was found that the trees became dry, posing a threat to road-users. Following this, the Commissioner passed orders to remove the dead trees in May.

A couple of months ago, during late evening a huge branch of one of the trees fell on the school premises. Considering the potential damage to public property, it was decided to take up the removal work, the authorities said. Under the existing greening norms, fresh avenue trees should be planted in place of those removed.
