Ceasefire off, rebels continue attacks

MONROVIA (Liberia) JULY 23. The Liberia's refugee-crowded capital was attacked by rebels on Wednesday, pressing their battle despite a pledge for a ceasefire seen as crucial to deployment of a multinational peace force for the warring West African nation.

Fighting on Wednesday focused on a key crossing, Stockton Bridge, Government officials said. Taking the bridge could lead rebels control northern suburbs and the road to Liberia's main airport, and encircle the city. "I'm not impressed at all," the Defence Minister, Daniel Chea, said about the announcement of a ceasefire by rebels on Tuesday. The European diplomats have said a ceasefire is essential for deployment of a promised West African peace force — particularly if Americans are to be persuaded to take part in the military intervention for the U.S.-founded nation. — AP
