Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Welcome suggestion

Sir, — The Supreme Court's suggestion for a uniform civil code ( July 24 ) is welcome. The Court has reasoned that the implementation of the code cannot be an infringement of the freedom of religion. Religious freedom is subject to public order, health and morality. It is also subject to the power of the state to provide for social welfare and reform.

Some of the antiquated features of personal laws need to be reformed in keeping with modern and contemporary standards of justice and humanism. Law cannot lag behind social progress. Nor can legal loopholes be left uncorrected.

Avuthu Srihari,

Secunderabad, A.P.
