Unions to discuss court stand on stir

NEW DELHI SEPT. 22. Over 6,000 representatives of the central trade unions and employees' federations of various Government and Public Sector Undertakings will meet in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the fallout of the Supreme Court judgment banning the right to strike. The convention will impress upon the Centre to file a review petition or bring legislation to nullify the ruling. On September 25, the employees' unions of the Central and State Governments will also meet here to discuss the issue. They will take part in the convention on the following day also, according to Tapan Sen of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The future course of action to be taken on the Supreme Court's order will be finalised on Friday, he said.

All nine central trade unions and employees' federations of railways, banks, insurance companies and several PSUs are expected to take part in the convention.

The Supreme Court in a significant ruling had said that the employees had no right to go on a strike. The ruling had come in connection with a petition challenging the dismissal of the Tamil Nadu Government employees.
