Five killed in road accidents

BANGALORE, FEB. 1. Five persons were killed and nine injured in three accidents in and around the city on Sunday.

The police said three persons were reportedly killed and eight injured when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a lorry near JHS Factory on Ramanagara-Bangalore Road near Sangabasavanadoddi.

The victims were returning to Antarasante near H.D. Kote after visiting a dargah at Murugapalli near Chintamani in Kolar district.

The police and the people had to struggle for over an hour to remove the bodies from the mangled jeep, according to eyewitness accounts. The accident caused a two-hour traffic hold-up.

The dead have been identified as Zarina Begun (48), Nagina Begum (45), and the jeep driver, Wajid Ahmed (27).

The injured, who were taken to Rotary Hospital in Ramanagara, have been identified as Mohamed Anis, Wajid Bashaa, Khalid, Nagina, Aslam Pasha, Apsar, Akbar, and Sayeed.

The police said two persons were killed on the flyovers on Mysore Road and Bellary Road (Hebbal) in the other accidents. Sailendrakumar (21), who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler, was reportedly killed when the vehicle was knocked down by a lorry near Vinayaka Cinema on the Sirsi Circle flyover at half past midnight. Dilip, who was riding the two-wheeler, has been admitted to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Surgery. He is said to be out of danger.

The victim of the other accident, Mahesh (28), was also riding a two-wheeler. He died on the spot.

The body was shifted to Baptist Hospital, the police said.
