Historic venue

The Glass House didn't just host flower shows

AFTER INDEPENDENCE and before the Parks Preservation Act was passed, the Glass House witnessed some memorable events quite unrelated to horticulture. Chief among them was the historic split in the Congress in 1969.

Few Bangaloreans can forget that the split, which changed the course of Indian politics, was announced in the Glass House. This apart, the Glass House also witnessed Congress sessions addressed by Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. It was also the venue for the birth centenary celebrations of Sir M. Visvesvaraya when he turned 101 in 1962.

Rabindranath Tagore, Queen Elizabeth II, and the Dalai Lama are some of the many others who have visited the Glass House.
