Man dies after tree branch falls on him

BANGALORE, FEB. 7. A physically challenged man fell victim to a tree-cutting exercise by a Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) team in Byatarayanapura police station limits on Saturday. The victim identified as Mani (50) died on the spot, the police said.

The BESCOM team was cutting the branches of a tree at Aligevodayarahalli near Rajarajeshwarinagar when a big branch fell on Mani who was walking under it. Mani was a resident of Aligevodayarahalli.

The tree branches were obstructing some electric wires in the area, the police said.

At least three BESCOM men were watching under the tree while another staffer was cutting it, the police said.

The Byatarayanapura police have taken up a case of negligence against the BESCOM personnel. Further investigation is on.

Dies in mishap

A motorcyclist, Kumar (28), was fatally knocked down by a jeep on Ring Road K.E.B. Junction in Girinagar police station limits on Friday. The victim who sustained grievous injuries was declared dead at NIMHANS at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday.

The victim was a resident of Chandra Layout. The pillion rider, Manjunath, who sustained serious injuries, has been shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. The Banashankari police have arrested the jeep driver and confiscated the vehicle.

Grills `stolen'

Unidentified persons reportedly stole signage, grills, handrail, and fencing pipes all worth about Rs. 77,200 from the Hebbal Flyover Bridge, Loop-2.

The suspected theft was reported to the police by a concerned citizen.

The theft took place between January 20 and February 5, according to the complainant, B.R.K. Nair.

The Hebbal police have taken up a case in this connection. The Hebbal Flyover, said to be the longest in the country, has lately become a major tourist attraction.

Youth arrested

A youth, Rakesh, who allegedly cheated several people by promising them Government jobs and BDA sites was arrested by the Nandini Layout police.

A mobile phone was seized from the accused, a resident of Nagashettihalli.

Investigation revealed that the accused had given marriage promises to six girls by convincing them that he was a Government employee and had brothers working abroad.

The other victims were assured eight BDA sites and Government jobs, the police said.

Held on theft charge

The Shankarpuram police arrested a domestic help, Vijayamma (35), and recovered gold jewellery, silver articles, silk saris, cameras, and wristwatches, all worth Rs. 3.75 lakh from her. They were allegedly stolen from her employer, Nagabhushan Rao's house on 2nd cross, Shankarpuram, the police said.

According to the Shankarpuram police, the accused had stolen the articles on November 13 last year when her employer was asleep. She falsely claimed that the goods were looted by two masked men who drugged her.

The police also recovered ornaments, allegedly stolen during June 2002, from a well near Vijayamma's house. The jewellery was packed in a plastic cover.
