Rajiv Gowda in Vichar Vibhag

Bangalore FEB. 27. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed M.V. Rajiv Gowda (in picture), professor at the Indian Institute of Management here, as convener of the "Vichar Vibhag" of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Dr. Gowda is the son of the Speaker of the dissolved Legislative Assembly, M.V. Venkatappa. The Chairman of the Vibhag is C.R. Narayanappa, a former general secretary of the KPCC and Chairman of the Karnataka State Slum Clearance Board. Arun Charantimath is its joint convener. The Vibhag will be organising a State-level convention of intellectuals on "Lok Sabha elections 2004: Issues before the nation: The role of the intelligentsia", in Bangalore, in the third week of March, according to Ashwini Kumar, Chairman of the AICC Vichar Vibhag.

KHDC may come out of the red

Bangalore FEB. 27. With the State Government planning to restructure its capital, Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation Ltd. (KHDC) is more confident of reducing its losses. The corporation Chairman, L.R. Ananth, told presspersons here on Friday that the loan from the Government and the interest on it amounting to Rs. 28.86 crore (as on March 31, 2003) would be converted into equity. The State Government would provide matching margin money share of Rs. 20 crore for the corporation's working capital, spread over two years and another Rs. 20 crore was expected to come from the Union Government. The State Government had sanctioned Rs. 14.03 crore for VRS in KHDC, pruning the staff strength by 270 persons over two years. The KHDC has appealed to Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, to amalgamate the handloom promotion organisations in the State, including Kaveri Handlooms, under a single entity. The corporation is organising a State-level weavers' conference in Hubli in the third week of March. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, will inaugurate the conference.

SUCI to join the fray

Bangalore FEB. 27. The State Committee of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) announced here on Friday that it would contest the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The SUCI State Secretary, K. Radhakrishna, said his organisation would field candidates for the Lok Sabha constituencies of Gulbarga, Bellary, Bangalore North, and Bangalore South. The SUCI candidates would also contest for the Assembly seats of Shahabad, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bellary, Chamaraja, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Binnypet, and Basavanagudi, he said.

Awards for disabled people

Bangalore FEB. 27. The annual awards event of the Chennai-based Ability Foundation working for equal opportunities for the disabled will be held here on March 5. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, is scheduled to give away three awards to persons selected from across the country. A panel, including Suhasini Maniratnam, Mohini Giri, Jayashree Raveendran, and N. Vittal will select the candidates for awards. Ms. Raveendran told The Hindu that the CavinKare Award for Eminence, comprising a purse of Rs. 1 lakh is given to a disabled person, who through empowerment-oriented initiatives, had helped others lead self-sufficient and productive lives.

Last date for commerce exam

Bangalore FEB. 27. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has said that the last date for submission of applications along with nominal roll for the commerce examination to be conducted by the Board during May is March 15. The principals of institutions having commerce courses in Bangalore can collect marks cards of the November 2003 examination and application forms from the Board office at Malleswaram here.

Lorry owners' plea

Chamarajanagar FEB. 27. The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Associations and Chamarajanagar Lorry Owners' Association have urged the Government to hand over the control of the Gundlupet border check-post to the Chamarajanagar Regional Transport Office.

In a memorandum submitted to the Transport Commissioner, they said that though the district RTO office here was only 35 km. from the check-post, it was under the control of the Mysore district RTO, which was 65 km. from Gundlupet.

Seminar held

MYSORE FEB. 27. More than 200 ex-servicemen participated in a seminar on the Union Government's Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) organised here on Thursday. The Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, Mysore, A.K. Madhok, and secretary of the Air Force Association, Karnataka, S. Padbidir, were guest lecturers at the seminar, which was aimed at familiarising and educating ex-servicemen on the advantages of becoming a member in the ECHS.

Expedition

MYSORE FEB. 27. The Rotary Mysore Adventure Corps is organising a national expedition to Har Ki Dun in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttaranchal from May 16 to June 6.

According to a press release from the Adviser to Rotary Mysore Adventure Corps, D.S.D. Solanki, the expedition is open only to pre-university and degree students. The team will be led by the Regional Director, International Academy of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, North India, Ravi M.J.

Blood donation

MANGALORE FEB. 27. The Lions Club, Chotamangalore, has organised a blood donation and AIDS awareness camp at the Government High School, Uchhila, on Sunday. A press release issued here said a bulletin to create awareness about AIDS would also be released on the occasion. Interested donors could donate blood between 9.30 a.m. and 1 p.m., the release added.

Bus stop

MANGALORE FEB. 27. The Regional Transport Officer has asked private bus operators to stop express buses bound to Karkala from Mangalore via Mulki, Padubidri, and Belmannu, at Haleyangadi.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority held recently, according to a press release.

Baby rescued

MANGALORE FEB. 27. Childline, a city-based non-governmental organisation, rescued a baby found abandoned at Madhya near Suratkal on Thursday.

The baby was found covered in a plastic bag in the corner of a compound, police said. After administering first aid, the child was handed over to Nirmala Welfare Society at Ullal, they added.

SHIMOGA FEB. 27. T.B. Satyanarayana, a cardiologist at the Government General Hospital at Sagar, has been elected President of the Karnataka State Government Medical Officers' Association.

BJP media strategy in March

Bangalore FEB. 27. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has worked out a nationwide media strategy that will be put in place by the first week of March. Part of the strategy will be the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, talking to voters on telephone. The strategy is being fine-tuned.

Prakash Javadekar, party spokesperson, said the BJP would use all available information tools, including the new media, to reach out to the voters. The party had created a national information network, connecting 100 centres across the country, in its effort to manage the information flow during the run-up to the polls.

The network, aided by media management software, would keep a tab on political and other important events happening in different parts of the country and make available this information to its campaign leaders. The network would track all the television news channels and alert the leaders about the issues that were current.

Similarly, a 24-hour call centre would address the questions regarding the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.

Further, the party will establish an SMS and e-mail centre for disseminating poll-related information.

Effigy burnt

HASSAN FEB. 27. Members of the Janata Dal (Secular) on Friday took out a procession in the city to protest the remarks of the Urban Development Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, against the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda.

The members led by the district unit President, Patel Shivaram, and the MP, H.K. Javare Gowda, burnt an effigy of Mr. Shivakumar near Narasimharaja Circle. Addressing the members, Mr. Javare Gowda criticised Mr. Shivakumar for his remarks against the former Prime Minister. The members submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Rare gesture

BELLARY FEB. 27. B.S. Yediyurappa, BJP leader, experienced some anxious moments during his visit to Bellary today.

Mr. Yediyurappa along with M. Venkaiah Naidu, party President, and H.N. Ananth Kumar, State unit President, arrived here to participate in the "Atal Sadhana Sandesh Yatra" of the party. The district unit leaders, including Janardhana Reddy, kept a cake in front of Mr. Yediyurappa and requested him to cut it. This surprised people who had gathered there. They came to know about the occasion only when Sanjay Betageri, Chairman of the Bellary district campaign committee of the party, announced that it was Mr. Yediyurappa's birthday today.

Decision soon

MADIKERI FEB. 27. The President of the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Kodagu unit, S.P. Mahadevappa, on Friday indicated that a decision to either boycott the coming elections or field a candidate belonging to the community would be taken in Kodagu, if the political parties did not give an opportunity to the members of the Veerashaiva community to contest the coming elections.

Award

GULBARGA FEB. 27. Shivashankar Sali, a doctor at the Government General Hospital here, has bagged the Vaidya Vibushan Award instituted by the Karnataka State Government Medical Officers' Association, for 2004.

Dr. Sali was presented with the award at the 21st conference of the association held in Tumkur recently. Dr. Sali has also bagged the Vaidyashree Award of the association, for 2000. He has been elected joint secretary of the association.

Water released

Raichur FEB. 27. Water from the Tungabhadra Dam was released into the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal (TLBC) on Thursday to augment supply to villages and camps along the canal in Koppal and Raichur districts.

Official sources told The Hindu today that the reservoir had 5.912 tmcft. of water of which, 2.05 tmcft. would be utilised as the State's share. Water was being released into the canal at 100 cusecs per hour and it would be increased to 2,000 cusecs in the next 10 days. This would help fill wells and tanks along the canal and the balancing reservoir at the end of the canal.

Four held

Raichur FEB. 27. The Sindhanoor police arrested four persons — one person from Sindhanoor and three from Roudkunda village — on the charge of gambling and recovered some cash from them on Thursday.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Ismail of Sindhanoor. He was remanded in judicial custody. Sharanappa and two others were arrested at Roudakunda and remanded in judicial custody, the police said.

Suicide

Raichur FEB. 27. Two persons committed suicide in Lingsugur taluk on Thursday, according to the police.

The police said Erappa committed suicide by hanging himself in his house at Mudgal. Ramappa consumed pesticide at Rayadurga village, they added.
