Karunakaran, Gill take oath

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13. Senior Congress leader, K. Karunankaran, the former Chief Election Commissioner, M.S Gill, and the Congress spokesperson, Anand Sharma, today took oath as members of the Rajya Sabha in the chambers of the House Chairman, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Mr. Karunakaran, a member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, was elected from Kerala along with the CPI(M) leader, A. Vijayaraghavan, and P.V.V. Abdul Wahab of the Muslim League from Kerala.

Mr. Gill was elected from Punjab along with another Congress leader, Ashwani Kumar. This is Mr. Kumar's second term in the House. He was earlier elected in 2002.

T.R. Zeliang from Nagaland of the Nagaland People's Front and Matilal Sarkar of the CPI(M) from Tripura were also elected to the House. Mr. Sharma was elected from Himachal Pradesh.

Varinder Singh of the Shiromani Akali Dal, who was also slated to take oath today, was not present.
