Applications invited
The aspirants should have an MBBS degree. The age limit for general candidates is 33 years, for backward class candidates 36 years, and for Scheduled Caste candidates 39 years. Candidates will be selected on the basis of merit and reservations. Selected candidates will be paid Rs. 7,400 a month. Applications are available at the office of Deputy Commissioner, Chitradurga, and the last date for submitting the applications is July 10.
Murdered
According to the police, Belurayya (36) was murdered by his relative. The Konanur police have registered a case.
Electrocuted
A case has been registered.
Compensation
The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, said in a press release that the compensation had been released after receiving a recommendation from the Assistant Commissioner, an application from Premsing's father, and other necessary documents were submitted.
Free education
As part of its month long campaign to create awareness about education, members of the SIO "inspiration team" visited over 100 families, and educated them about the need to send their children to school. As many as 116 students from 52 families were distributed notebooks free of cost during the campaign, a press release said.
Hostels
According to the release, there were vacancies at the boys and girls hostels in Aurad (B), the boys hostel in Santhpur, and the girls hostel in Jambagi. Interested candidates may approach the taluk Social Welfare Officer with their marks cards, caste, and income certificates before July 13, the release added.
Man dies
The police identified the rider as Mohammed Iqbal. The Yergera Police have registered acase.
Two arrested
Both the accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
New Sub Area Commander
BANGALORE July 5. Brigadier J.S. Bajwa on Monday assumed charge as Commander of the Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area here. Before his new posting, Brigadier Bajwa served as the Commander of 11 Sector Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir. He was commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment after his graduation from the Indian Military Academy in 1973. Brig. Bajwa also held several important staff and command assignments, including at the Army Headquarters. He was also part of the Directing Staff at the Army War College, Mhow. The outgoing Commander, Brigadier M.P. Singh, was instrumental in implementing various welfare schemes for serving and ex-servicemen during his tenure here. Brigadier Singh will now join the Headquarters Northern Command as Major General, Artillery.
ZP president voted out of office
CHITRADURGA JULY 5. Soubhagya Basavarajan, President of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat, was voted out of office on Monday. Twenty members voted in favour of the no-confidence motion in the 31-member panchayat. A special meeting was convened to discuss the no-confidence motion today. After the results were out, H. Nagaraj, Vice-President of the zilla panchayat, chaired the proceedings. The detractors of Ms. Basavarajan had dropped enough hints that she would be ousted. They stayed away from the general body meeting on June 15, forcing a postponement of the meeting because of lack of quorum. The meeting scheduled for June 29 was also adjourned. Meanwhile, her detractors handed over an application to the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Narayanaswamy, on June 20 expressing lack of confidence in her. Eight months ago, Ms. Basavarajan flouted the Congress's directions and split the party. She later got re-elected to the post. Subsequently, she and 11 of her followers were expelled from the party. The Janata Dal (S) leaders of the district decried the move to oust Ms. Basavarajan.
HGMCL clear dues to Govt.
Raichur July 5. Hutti Gold Mines Company Ltd. (HGMCL) has released an outstanding amount of Rs. 88.41 lakh to the Government towards guarantee commission for the previous financial year. In a statement released here today, Parasmal Sukhani, chairman of the company, said the Government stood guarantee when the company raised funds through bonds for implementing the expansion programme. He said that a cheque for Rs. 88.41 lakh was presented to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Sunday. Mr. Sukhani said that the company was in the red till 2000-01 because of fall in gold price in the world market. Low productivity and high cost of production were the major factors that affected the financial position of the company. However, the company was able to make profit from 2002-03 by reducing the production cost. The improved gold price had also helped the company register profit. Mr. Sukhani said that during 2003-04, the company had made a net profit (before tax) of Rs. 50.16 crore by producing 3,107 kg of gold worth Rs. 172.66 crore. The company had set a target to produce 3,301 kg of gold in the current financial year. He said that the company had initiated steps to improve gold production in the next 10 years by modernised milling and gold extraction. A proposal had been finalised to set up a 7 MW windmill in Chitradurga, he added.
Kailasam Award for Kulkarni
Bangalore July 5. Srinivas Kulkarni, writer and a former Director of Doordarshan, has been selected for this year's Kailasam Award instituted by Goruru Pratisthana. A press release said he would receive the award at a function in Hospet on July 29. According to the note, Dr. Kulkarni got his doctorate from Karnatak University, Dharwad, for a thesis on Kailasam. He has written 11 books.
ZP chiefs seek Minister's rank
BANGALORE JULY 5. The Federation of Karnataka Zilla Panchayat Presidents and Vice-Presidents has urged the Government to elevate the zilla panchayat president's post to the rank of Minister of State and that of vice-president to the rank of Deputy Minister. At its first meeting here today, it was felt that there was a dire need to bring in changes to make the zilla panchayat system work more effectively. The federation, in a resolution, decided to seek immediate action by the Government on its plea. The president of the federation, K. Ramesh, and the vice-president, Lakshmana Reddy, told presspersons that a delegation would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday. Some of the demands the federation are: powers to draw money from zilla panchayat funds should be jointly shared by the panchayat president and the chief executive officer; the responsibility of writing secret reports to the Government should be entrusted to the president; the tenure of president and vice-president should be extended to 30 months; and the zilla panchayats should be given powers to appoint employees.
