Woman killed, 4 masked men held

VILLUPURAM July 9. Five masked men entered the house of a jeweller, Ramar Chettiar, at Gengavaram near Valathi last night and killed his wife, Maheswari (35), before decamping with valuables.

However, on hearing the alarm raised by the victim, the neighbours caught four of the intruders. The police said the culprits struck when Mr. Chettiar had gone to Villupuram, leaving his wife alone in the house.

When she resisted the attempt of the thieves to loot the valuables, they allegedly caught hold of her and dashed her head against the wall. Mohan Babu (27), Palani (21), Anbu (22) and Raja (22) of Velapadi in Vellore district were nabbed. The police seized from them some jewellery and Rs. 10,000 in cash.

Trains diverted

MADURAI JULY 9. A few trains have been partially cancelled/diverted following a landslide between Kulitturai and Eraniel stations in Thiruvananthapuram division today.

The Kanyakumari-Jammu Tawi Himsagar Express scheduled to leave Kanyakumari at 12.55 p.m. today was rescheduled to depart at 3.30 p.m. and diverted via Nagercoil, Tirunelveli and Madurai. The Madurai-Jammu Tawi link train would be attached to the Himsagar Express at Madurai and the train will leave (Madurai) at 11.30 p.m. tomorrow. The Chennai Egmore-Thiruvananthapuram Ananthapuri Express, which left from Chennai Egmore on July 8 was terminated at Nagercoil today. The Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Egmore Express would start from Nagercoil as per the scheduled timings.

The Madurai-Kollam passenger scheduled to leave Madurai at 10.30 p.m. has been cancelled between Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram and it would leave Nagercoil at 4.30 a.m. tomorrow to Madurai as a passenger special.

The Kollam-Madurai passenger scheduled to leave Kollam at 6 p.m. today has been cancelled between Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai. The train will return to Kollam from Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow, says a Southern Railway release.

Suspended for desertion

NAMAKKAL JULY 9. The Namakkal Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, has placed under suspension a head constable attached to the Mangalapuram station following a complaint by his wife of destruction and harassment.

Alith, who had been married to Selvaraj for 22 years, alleged that he deserted her some years ago and even after that was threatening her. A teacher in a Talaivasal school, she also stated in her complaint that Selvaraj had tried to discredit her in public.

The SP, who held a preliminary enquiry, has also directed that a departmental probe be launched against Selvaraj.

One killed in boiler burst

ERODE JULY 9. One worker was charred to death and three others sustained serious burns in a boiler explosion at a private chemical factory at Thambiranvalasu near Modakurichi this morning. Chemicals spilled over the four workers standing near the boiler. They were taken to a private hospital, where Murugesan (32) died. Suresh, Murugan and Natarajan are undergoing treatment.

The police are searching for the owner.

The residents of the area and the district panchayat councillor, Subatra, said the factory was polluting the air and despite many complaints to the Government, no action had been taken.

Float festival begins

Tiruvarur July 9. The three-day float festival of the Thyagarajaswamy temple here began yesterday. Hundreds of people witnessed the impressively illuminated and tastefully decorated float as it made three rounds in the sprawling Kamalalayam tank. The float which started moving at nine p.m. completed three rounds at 4 a.m. this morning.

P. Ekambaram, Tiruvarur Collector, S. Bhaskara, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvarur district, S. Ilango, Joint commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charities and Endowment board, witnessed the float.

Anna varsity exam results

CHENNAI JULY 9. Results of Anna University B.E and B.Tech examinations (III to VI semester), held in April/May this year have been published.

CHENNAI JULY 9. Vishak K. Viswanath of Ethiraj College for Women here has been selected to attend the Youth Exchange Programme with United Kingdom from July 20 to August 4. She is the only girl selected from 1 (TN) Girls Bn NCC, says an official release.

Fatal fall for head constable

TIRUCHI JULY 9 . Sunderraj (50), a head constable of Thalavai police station in Perambalur district, died in a train accident last night.

He was proceeding to Echangadu from Pullambadi in the Tiruchi-Vriddhachalam Passenger train. He tried to get down from the moving train when it was entering the Echangadu railway station but fell down and was injured. He was sent in the same train to Vriddhachalam where a doctor declared him dead.

The train suffered detention for sometime at the Echangadu railway station, the sources said.

four injured

NAGAPATTINAM JULY 9. One died and four others were injured when a private mini bus in which they were travelling from Thirukkadaiyur to Porayar overturned on the roadside at Kattucherry today.

Police sources said that the deceased was identified as Balasubramaniam (35), a farmer of Thillaiyadi in Nagapattinam district. All the injured were admitted to the Government Hospital at Porayar. The police arrested bus driver Paramanandam and registered a case in this connection.

Old man killed

NAGAPATTINAM JULY 9 . Krishnamoorthy (60) of Mayiladuturai who was walking on the road near a petrol bunk at Mayiladuturai was knocked down by a hit- and-run motorcyclist last night. He died at the Government Hospital at Chidambaram today. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
