Confusion still over BITS admission

HYDERABAD, JULY 9. The procedure of admission to the Birla Institute of Science & Technology (BITS), Pilani, continued to confuse aspirants and parents with some television channels running scrolls on Friday that the Central Government had announced that the current admission mode would continue for this academic year.

Though elated with the news, parents were puzzled as to how the Government would announce its decision when the matter was with the Supreme Court, which has set the next date for hearing on the issue on July 12.

The news scrolls also mentioned that the Government had asked the students to contact the BITS, Pilani, immediately for the new admission procedure and dates thus sending parents and students into confusion.

However, the BITS authorities feigned ignorance of any such directives from the Central Government to them. L.K. Maheshwari, Director, BITS, Pilani campus told The Hindu that they were waiting for the Supreme Court hearing on July 12 regarding the admissions.

"We have not received any information whatsoever in this regard and any development would be posted on our Website," Prof. Maheshwari said. "We are aware of only the July 6th order of the Supreme Court and as of now the status quo remains," said K.E. Raman, Deputy Director, Administration, BITS. Meanwhile, a delegation of parents from the State met the Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD), Arjun Singh, and apprised him of the anxiety of students from the State with the sudden change in admission procedure.

L.V.S.R.K. Prasad, a member of the parents' delegation, said the Minister was sympathetic to the students' view and promised to take positive action.

The delegation also met B.S. Baswan, Secretary, Education, and submitted a memorandum. Earlier, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, MP, also met Mr. Arjun Singh along with some State MPs and requested him to see that justice was done to the students.
