Back Indigenous cotton has low micronaire value, says SITRA

INDIAN cotton varieties namely Suvin, DCH-32, MCU-5, Brahma, LK and Sankar-6 have shown lower micronaire values. Overseas cotton varieties such as Pima, Chinese and Giza 89, on the other hand, have displayed maximum fibre elongation in the order of 7 per cent or more with their micronaire values ranging from 2.9 to 4.6, an analysis of fibre quality trends done by the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) shows

The micronaire values of indigenous cotton at unacceptably low levels of below 3 is indicative of their propensity to produce yarns of inferior quality, the SITRA Director, Dr Arindum Basu, said unveiling the results of analysis done by his association at the inauguration of the 29th technological conference.

According to Dr Basu, Chinese cotton ranked the best with respect to elongation with a maximum value of 8.3 per cent followed by Pima and Giza with a maximum elongation value of 7.1 per cent.

The association has also come out with a micro-controller based intelligent monitoring and information system named SITRA-CIM (Comber Intelligent Monitor), which provides online monitoring of process production and machine data management for combers.

The know-how and licence have been given to an engineering firm for commercial manufacture.
