Back Chidambaram wants speedy disposal of I-T settlement cases K.R. Srivats
New Delhi , Aug. 13 THE Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has asked the members of the income-tax settlement commission to initiate measures to bring down the time taken for disposal of cases that are before the commission. Informed sources said that the Finance Minister emphasised faster disposal of cases so that the Revenue Department and assessees could gain comfort over the "institution of settlement commission" and its ability in resolving disputes through conciliation. All the 12 members of the settlement commission were present at the meeting. The total value of cases under dispute before the income-tax settlement commission is estimated to be about Rs 2,000 crore.
