Rise in price

unrealistic

Sir, — The recent increase in the prices of fuel is unrealistic and unreasonable.

It further burdens the common man who has already been affected by the cut in interest rates on deposits.

There was a reduction in international crude prices recently. So why was the price of fuel increased?

Fare cut

Sir, — The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, has announced full concession in train fare for unemployed youth attending interviews for Union Government jobs and 75 per cent concession for haemophilia patients going for treatment by trains.

Nowadays, many people have heart diseases, the treatment of which needs huge sums. Fare concession should be extended to them also. Also, youth attending interviews for State Government jobs should be given the concession.

Bus passes

Sir — Students in central schools are not getting bus passes as the closing and reopening of these schools differ from those run by the State Government.

The authorities concerned in the Department of Education should ensure that all schools, whether run by the Union or the State Governments, are opened and closed at the same time.

Otherwise, they should arrange to provide yearly bus passes to students to help them attend vacation classes too.

Population

Sir, — There is nothing wrong with the huge population per se. The real cause for concern is that so many of us are illiterate and in poor health.

Population growth will not cease on the orders of the Government. People will practise birth control, if they perceive it to be safe, for their individual good. Today, there is enough food to feed the world's population.

Several civilisations, including the Greek and Roman, have collapsed owing to dwindling populations.
