Back XLRI student society to focus on operations management Our Bureau
Kolkata , Aug. 17 XLRI Jamshedpur has launched a new student society for industrial and operations management. AXIOM, or Association at XLRI for Industrial and Operations Management, has been flagged off with a one-day workshop. The society would try to focus on operations management, which has lately emerged as a key functional area, a statement issued by the External Linkages Cell of XLRI said. The subject of the workshop was `Operations management Where does it go from here?' It covered round tables and technical sessions. The latter included a session on the role of operations management in State Bank of India's ATM initiatives, conducted by the head of SBI's ATM operations in Bihar and Jharkhand. The communication from XLRI had Dr T.A.S. Vijayraghavan, faculty coordinator of AXIOM and professor of operations management, referring to the manufacturing sector that now forms a key element in supply chain management. AXIOM will be expected to look at the recent trends in operations and manufacturing from a management perspective. It will ultimately help create a synergy between the industrial belt in Jamshedpur and XLRI's focus on the subject. The statement also had Mr Navin Ranjan, Secretary of AXIOM, as saying that industries in Jamshedpur alone have an annual turnover of about Rs 45,000 crore. The management school, he said, sees a bonding between its initiatives and the availability of industry experts in the vicinity. Incidentally, AXIOM plans to take up student consultancy projects for the industry. It may be mentioned that XLRI already has a number of committees. These include MAXI (the Marketing Association of XLRI), SAPPHIRE (the HR Association of XLRI), SOCRATES (the Systems Society) and FINAX, the Finance Committee at XLRI.
