Back Tiruchi Corporation to generate power from waste

THE Tiruchi Corporation has plans to set up a 2.5-MW plant for generation of power from the waste collected in the city.

The Institute of Energy Studies (IES) of Anna University, Chennai, has come up with a detailed report on the project. According to the report, the city has been generating 308 tonnes of municipal solid waste a day, of which, 290 tonnes are being cleared by the corporation.

The generation of waste is expected to go up to 500 tonnes a day by 2010. The organic content in the waste, which is around 75 to 80 per cent, offered a good scope for generation of power.

The institute has suggested that biodegradable waste be used for production of power while organically burnable waste be sold as combustible material to industries for burning kilns.

The inorganic waste could be used for land filling. The project would yield an annual income of Rs 9.96 crore through the sale of power, manure and incinerable waste, the report said.

According to the Tiruchi Corporation Mayor, Ms Sarubala R. Tondaiman, a decision has been taken to pursue the project and approach the Government soon for administrative sanction, the sources said.
