Feast to eyes and minds of students




For a perfect physique .


The two-day computer carnival `ODYSSEY-2004,' organised by final-year MCA and M.Sc. students of the Department of Computer Science at AVC College in Mayiladuturai, was a boon to the students.

B. Gopakumar, Head, Department of English, AVC College, inaugurated the carnival. K.Thiyagarajan, Head, Department of Computer Science, presided.

The programme was a feast to the eyes and minds of the students who witnessed the software exhibition, web designing, software quiz etc. Flash clippings and PowerPoint presentation on the latest in information technology were the highlight of the second-day programme.

V. Radhakrishnan, principal, AVC College, presided over the valedictory function. M. Tamilarasan, Head, Department of Commerce, released the `GLOBUS-2004,' the annual magazine of the students.

B. Krishnan, SWIFT secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

Nearly 35 research papers were presented at the two-day UGC-sponsored State-level seminar on `Environmental impacts assessment and control-2004' conducted by the Department of Chemistry, ADM College for Women, Nagapattinam, last week.

G. Madhurambal, Head, Department of Chemistry, ADM College for Women, and her faculty members released the proceedings of the seminar, chaired by the college principal, A. Sivakamasundari. Awards were presented for best paper presentation at the seminar.

Sulochana Nagarajan, Head, Department of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, who inaugurated the seminar, highlighted the benefits of bio-diesel over petroleum and diesel by minimising green house gas emission.

G. Nagarajan, Deputy General Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, spoke. Prabhavathy Nagarajan of Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, Abdul Jameel of Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchi, spoke on eco-friendly management.

On the second day, G. S.Murthy, Manager, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, Narimanam, gave a lecture on familiarisation with ISO standards. M. Swaminathan of Annamalai University explained the novel approach of minimising eco-toxicity and Elangovan of Sri AVVM Pushpam College, Poondi, spoke on environmental trend.

Two lecture sessions held under the auspices of the Department of Tamil, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women in Perambalur recently, provided tips to the students on the importance of developing values and the significance of humour.

On the first session, N. Hemalatha of the Department of Tamil, who delivered the lecture on `humanity' at the inaugural of the `Youth Red Cross,' exhorted students to develop virtues like simplicity and cultivate qualities like fraternity and humility.

The Principal, R. M. Meenakshi, spoke.

Another seminar on `Ilakkiyamum and Nagaichuvaiyum,' delivered by R. Kalidasan from Karandai Arts College, Thanjavur, said humour was an essential quality. He cited various incidents from Kamba Ramayanam to drive home the point.

The inaugural of the Chemistry Association of the Department of Chemistry of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women in Perambalur was marked by a lecture on `Wealth from waste,' delivered by K. Managayarkarasi, Reader in Chemistry, Holy Cross College, Tiruchi.

She explained how waste materials could be utilised. Utilisation of flyash, for instance, to manufacture bricks was not only cost-effective but also became an important building material.

S. Anitha, Head, Department of Chemistry, presided.

A special lecture on `mutation approaches in strain improvement' organised by the Chakrabarthy Club of Gene Technology, J. J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, helped students to have an insight into how mutation approach helps to trigger dynamic improvement of technology to increase productivity, accessibility and easy availability of consumer goods.

Students from departments of gene technology, botany and biotechnology were sensitised to the latest information on mutation, mutagenesis, and mutagenic agents comprising the powerful and versatile tools for modifying genes, by M. N. Abubacker, mycologist and Head, Post Graduate and Research Department of Botany, National College, Tiruchi.
