Back `Centre committed to reservation for women in legislatures'

THE Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Mr Oscar Fernandes, has said that the Union Government is committed to providing reservation for women in Parliament and State legislatures.

Inaugurating the decennial celebrations of the Dakshina Kannada Women's Co-operative Bank Ltd on Monday, he said that of more than 30 lakh panchayat members in the country, 10 lakh are women.

Lauding the achievements of the bank in the past 10 years, he said that such women's co-operative banks should be set up in every district.

The Union Government has implemented various programmes for the empowerment of women, he added.

The President of the Karnataka State Co-operative Federation, Mr G.T. Deve Gowda, was present.
