Skating competitions

TIRUPATI: The CBSE south-zone skating competitions-2004 will be held at Tirupati from Septembe 24. Seventy six schools from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Goa, Diu Daman, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Andhra Pradesh are to take part. The event is to be hosted by Sri Vidyaniketan International School.

Apology demanded

KURNOOL: The State vice-president of Freedom Fighters Association, G. Venkat Reddy, has demanded an apology from the TRS president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, for his `loose talk' against the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. Mr Reddy said the Telengana movement failed to receive support from leaders of other regions because of leaders like Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Works cleared

KURNOOL: The standing panels of the Zilla Parishad here on Monday cleared works worth Rs. 4 crores. The Zilla Parishad Chairman, B. Venkatramudu, the MP, S.P.Y. Reddy, the MLAs, S.V. Subba Reddy, M.A. Gafoor, Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, Gouru Charita, Sikhamani and others were present.

Row hinders ore handling

NELLORE: The loading and unloading work of iron ore, relating to Krishnapatnam port, from Venkatachalam railway station, received a setback due to differences of opinion and clashes between a section of hamalies. The row was about entrusting the work to `locals', and is yet to be settled.

`Akali yatra' by CPI, union

CUDDAPAH: The CPI and Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union members took out a rally and staged a dharna before the MRO office in Badvel town on Monday, demanding provision of work and rice to the poorer sections.

Terming the protest as `Aakali yatra' the BKMU district general secretary, P. Krishnamurthy, demanded distribution of 30 kg. of rice to each poor family, to prevent their migration.

Dharna by women

CUDDAPAH: A large number of women staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Monday, under the aegis of the AP Mahila Samakhya, demanding issue of ration cards. Addressing the protesters, the samakhya district president, P. Sanjeevamma, accused the officials of committing irregularities in issue of ration cards and denying cards to scores of eligible families.
