Back Coimbatore Excise drive to net more service tax Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Sept. 22 THE Central Excise authorities here are gearing up to set up special registration camps at the divisional office level to accept voluntary registration of service providers who had earlier failed to register themselves with the department to be covered under the service tax net. Besides the divisional offices, the department would also specify other places where such camps could be set up and these places would be identified by the jurisdictional commissioners. Similarly, the zonal excise authorities here have also initiated steps to set up fast-track disposal camps to deal with the pending service tax cases awaiting adjudication. The camps intended to speed up the adjudication of cases would be held in two phases, from October 4 to 8, and again from October 18 to 21. It would be held at the excise divisional offices and other places to be decided by the jurisdictional commissioners, according to an official communication from Mr J.M.K. Sekhar, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Coimbatore zone. The Coimbatore Excise zone comprising the Commissionerates of Salem, Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli besides Coimbatore has 28,493 service providers registered with the excise authorities. The initiation of the special registration camps and the fast-track disposal scheme for pending service tax cases has been made in the wake of the Finance Ministry's drive to widen the service tax collection during the current fiscal.
