Bid to rob bank

NELLORE: Miscreants made an abortive attempt to rob the State Bank of India (SBI) branch, at Kaligiri on Tuesday night. They allegedly gained entry into the bank by breaking open the window grills. However, nothing was found missing. The incident was noticed on Wednesday morning and reported to police.

Women stage

rasta roko

CUDDAPAH: Women staged a rasta roko in Badvel town, under the aegis of A.P. Mahila Samakhya, protesting against the increasing atrocities against women. The Samakhya district secretary, Basheerunnisa, Area Secretary, B. Subbamma, secretary, K. Subbamma, the CPI Area Secretary, Venkatasubbaiah, and others alleged there was a rise in the number of women killed due to marital disputes and demanded that the police initiate stern action against the accused. They submitted a memorandum to the Badvel MRO, Chennakesava Reddy.

Elected

CUDDAPAH: The Congress MPTC member of Ippenta, Manikyala Venkatesh, was unanimously elected Chintakommadinne Mandal Parishad President in elections held in the MDO office on Wednesday. Election was neccessiated following the resignation of the mandal president, Krishnaiah. Mr. Venkatesh was supported by the Congress MPTC members and their Telugu Desam Party counterparts.

Woman dies

in mishap

CHITTOOR: A woman died, and four others were seriously injured when a lorry rammed into a roadside shop at Rangampet on Chittoor-Tirupathi national highway. The lorry was proceeding towards Chittoor from Vijayawada. While Prameelamma (35) died on the way to the hospital, Subramanyam Reddy (45), Ramakrishna (35), Geetha (20), and Chengamma (40) were seriously injured.

Train halt

at Nellore

HYDERABAD: The Bhubaneshwar-Yesvantpur (Bangalore) weekly Express train (No.8415/8418) will halt at Nellore on the Vijayawada-Gudur section with effect from Monday. Accordingly, train No.8415 Bhubaneshwar-Yesvantpur weekly Express leaving Bhubaneshwar at 6.50 a.m on Sundays, will arrive at Nellore at 12.25 a.m and leave at 12.27 a.m. In the return direction, the train will arrive at Nellore at 5.38 p.m and leave at 5.40 p.m.

Hotel gutted

NELLORE: A portion of a hotel in Sankar colony near Ayyappa temple centre here was gutted on Wednesday. Fire tenders put out the fire, which reportedly occurred due to gas leak.

Gurazada

remembered

NELLORE: The 142nd birthday celebrations of Mahakavi Gurazada Apparao, were held here under the auspcies of Jana Vignana Vedika on Wednesday. Several speakers who took part in the celebrations referred to the literary excellence of the great writer, besides his contribution towards reforming the social structure of the society. They regretted that Gurajada, was yet to be recognised as a national writer.

CPI to support Congress

in byelections

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India will support the Congress in the Asifnagar and Siddipet Assembly byelections.

Announcing this here on Wednesday, S. Sudhakar Reddy, MP and CPI State secretary, said the party decided to extend support to the Congress candidates in view of the present political situation in the State. The party executive discussed the issue after a request was made by the Congress seeking support of CPI in the elections, he said in a press statement.

Lifer for killing wife

ELURU: The District Judge, K. Sanjeevarao Naidu, on Wednesday sentenced one A Rama Rao of Dommeru in Kovvur mandal of West Godavari district to life imprisonment for killing his wife. According to the prosecution, he killed his wife, Neelaveni, employed with a private

Factory, in 2001, suspecting her fidelity. He slit her throat with a knife and fled. Her two children saw her in a pool of blood the next day and informed the relatives of the murder, the prosecution said.

Held on assault charge

KARIMNAGAR: The Kathalapur police arrested two persons on the charge of assaulting an old woman branding her sorcerer in Tandriyal village of the mandal on Wednesday.

According to the Kathalapur SI, R Bheem Sharma, the two accused, K Gangadhar and K Naresh, residents of Kalikota village in the same mandal, had entered the house of T Raju (50) and assaulted her charging her with practising witchcraft to kill one Gangadhar.

Telecom network inaugurated

HYDERABAD: The Union Minister for Power, P. M. Sayeed, on Wednesday inaugurated the Powergrid's prestigious telecom network of Southern region connecting the metros of Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kochi.

These cities are now linked to Powergrid's broadband telecom network connecting other metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities including the North-East. The inauguration was symbolised through a videoconference by the Minister at Bangalore in the presence of the other dignitaries at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Vijayawada and Kochi, which is the landing station for international submarine telecom cables, according to a press note issued by the Powergrid Corporation of India Limited here.

Selected for Nayudamma award

NELLORE: The Member, Planning Commission, Kirit S. Parikh, has been chosen to receive the prestigious Nayudamma award for the year, 2004, instituted by Nayudamma Centre for Development Alternatives, Nellore.

Dr. Parikh is an outstanding economist from MIT, USA, and has been a Professor of Economics since 1968. He was a member of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) of several former Prime Ministers.

I-T Dept. to open new offices

HYDERABAD: The Income Tax Department is opening new offices at Tuni, Tadepalligudem and Suryapet in the State to meet the growing needs of taxpayers.

According to a press note issued on Wednesday, the Tuni office would be opened on Thursday with jurisdiction of Tuni, Sankhavaram, Kotananduru, Toondangi, Gollaprolu, Prathipadu and Yelleswaram in East Godavari district.

The Tadepalligudem office would be opened on September 27, covering the revenue mandals of Tadepalligudem, Pentapdu, Nidamarru, Nallajarla and Devarapalli of West Godavari district.

The third IT office would be opened at Suryapet on October 1 with jurisdiction spread over 27 revenue mandals of Nalgonda district. The other offices would be functional at Adilabad and Vikarabad from the third week of October.

Ex-Minister appears in court

ADILABAD: The former Union Minister and Adilabad MP, S. Venugopalachary, made an appearance before the Boath Judicial Magistrate First Class on Wednesday following summons to him in connection with a case under the SC, ST (Prevention of) Atrocities Act. The case was a result of a private complaint filed by B. Vidya Kumar. He alleged that Mr. Venugopalachary had slapped and verbally abused him in the name of his caste while he was the medical officer at Bazarhatnoor primary health centre last year. The former MP arrived at the court at about 10.15 am and he was called at about 11 am. The case was adjourned to Novemebr 3.

Panchayat Raj engineer suspended

CUDDAPAH: The State Government has issued orders placing the Superintending Engineer of Panchayat Raj, Cuddapah Circle, Venkateswara Rao, under suspension on charges of misappropriation of funds.

Mr. Venkateswara Rao, who joined as SE here on September 3, faced charges of corruption in the past when he worked as Executive Engineer of Panchayat Raj and SE of Rural Water Supply (RWS) at Warangal. His suspension orders came as an enquiry proved the charges against him, according to official sources. The SE of Panchayat Raj, Anantapur circle, Ganeswara Rao, assumed charge as incharge SE of Cuddapah circle and sent the order by fax as he was undergoing departmental training.

TDP memo on dairy poll issue

HYDERABAD: A Telugu Desam Party delegation on Wednesday represented to the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, seeking direction to the Government to ensure peaceful conduct of the postponed Visakha Co-operative Dairy elections, slated for September 29.

The delegation, comprising senior leaders, was accompanied by A. Tulasi Rao, Chairman of the Board of Directors and presidents of other primary milk societies. The memorandum signed by Mr. Rao, several directors and presidents of societies, urged the Governor to uphold democratic values in societies and facilitate smooth conduct of elections.

Monsoon active over Rayalaseema

Hyderabad: The South-West monsoon was active over Rayalaseema and there was rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and Telangana. Vikarabad recorded a heavy rainfall of 6 cm during the 24-hour period ending this morning.

The other chief amounts of rainfall during the period were: Penukonda, Pulivendula 5 cm each, Allagadda, Hindupur, Rajahmundry 4 cm each, Tuni, Badwel, Proddatur, Chintapalli, Koilkuntla, Owk, Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar dam 2 cm each.

Isolated light to moderate rain is forecast at a few places in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Thursday.
