Kannur retains title

KOCHI, SEPT. 29. Kannur, with a strong show in the track events, retained the overall title in the 35th Kerala Police athletic meet, which concluded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday.

All the five golds for Kannur came from the track, with M.K. Shameer winning three of them. Interestingly, Shameer's golds came from two middle-distance races and the 400m hurdles, a rather strange combination.

Kannur, which topped the overall inter-district table with 142 points, also finished first in the men's team championship with 87 points. Kottayam won the women's team honours with 60 points. Kannur's Shameer and Ernakulam's Jayaraj P. Rajan shared the individual championship in the men's section with 26 points while Kottayam's T.G. Bindu, also with 26 points, was the women's winner.
