Back Is UPS absolutely necessary?

I am using a computer with Windows XP as the OS. I don't use it extensively and I do not have any power problem in my area. Is it necessary to have a UPS or is it possible to do without it? I have an APC backup UPS, but of late, it has started giving problems. Please suggest a solution.

The UPS has two key functions — to eliminate voltage fluctuation and give power backup for at least a minimum period to let you have the system shut down. If you feel that your power supply is consistent and without much fluctuation, then you can do without a UPS. You can just have a Spike Buster (Not Power Stripe).

However, it should be kept in mind that every time the system is halted suddenly due to power supply or any other reasons, it does affect the hard disk, and the OS also, which will lead to loss of files and data, and at times lead to system crash. If you use your systems only for playing games or browsing the Net, then there is nothing to worry, you can always have things loaded again.
