HYDERABAD: DePuy, a Johnson and Johnson company, has launched a metal-on-metal hip replacement device that could `revolutionise' the replacement procedure offering more convenience and comfort for patients.

The device, Articular Surface Replacement (ASR), would help patients move and squat like any healthy person. "Patients in India get the maximum benefit out of ASR as it allows squatting," said Dr A.V. Gurava Reddy, an ortho specialist at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Ltd.

The ASR system that costs Rs 1 lakh hit the Andhra Pradesh market on Friday.

Mr P. Mahboob Hussain, Zonal Manager of DePuy, said the system was more suitable for active patients who would like to continue their physical jobs. The company plans to set up a learning centre at KIMS, he said.
