Back Global warming

This is with reference to "Keeping cool" (Business Line, October 26). The movie The Day After Tomorrow exhibited clearly what type of extreme weather events could happen if the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic Ocean suddenly switched off due to increasing rate of global warming. But it is deplorable that such a deep concern for arresting global warming can be seen only in the Hollywood movies and not in the attitude of governments.

The US' contribution to global warming is far more than that of any other country in the world. The US power sector emissions alone exceed the combined emissions from 146 countries and the US alone was responsible for about 25 per cent of the 1990 carbon dioxide emissions. Still, the US has declined to sign the Kyoto Protocol, which mandates reduction of carbon dioxide and other polluting gases.
