J&K security will not be compromised: Vij

By Our Staff Reporter

UDHAMPUR, NOV. 22. THE Chief of the Army Staff, N.C. Vij, today said security would not be compromised in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to reportersafter inaugurating the Dhruva wide band satellite network at the Northern Command Headquarters, Gen. Vij said: ``We have taken security concerns into reckoning. There should be no worry as steps have been taken for the safety and security of the people living in remote areas. The Army is capable of safeguarding the people despite the de-induction.''

The Army Chief saidinfiltration attempts continued from the other side. ``This month alone, there have been eightattempts and the Army has foiled them. Our efforts to block the terrorists' routes continue. We have brought the infiltration leveldown.''

The surveillance equipment installed along the Line of Control and fencing are the principal factors for the decline in infiltration, he said. Terming fencing as a great help in the efforts to foil infiltration, the Army Chief said: ``Three months back, we completed our fencing and it is showing good results.''

On the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharaff's statement that the reduction of troops was a cosmetic step taken by India, he said: ``I cannot comment on such statements. We are taking steps with sincerity and every one can see what we are doing.''
