Child found murdered

MADURAI NOV. 27 . A two-month-old infant was found murdered at Kannanur in Usilampatti taluk in the district today. The police are on the look-out for her father, O. Seemairaja.

Though some self-help group members lodged a complaint with the Chekkanoorani police that it was a case of "female infanticide", the police said after an investigation that it was a "murder", as Seemairaja suspected that the baby was born out of his wife, Selvi's first marriage.

Seemairaja had been forcing his wife to kill the baby for quite sometime. When Selvi had gone out to fetch water this morning, he closed the baby's mouth and nose, suffocating it to death, the police said.

Investigations revealed that Seemairaja was in love with Selvi. But Selvi's father, Muthukannan, had married her off to one of his relatives. However, Selvi got divorced when her husband came to know about her relationship with Seemairaja, who married her in March this year.

Doctors examine Maudhany

COIMBATORE NOV. 27 . A doctor and a team of four technicians from the Government Orthopaedic Institute and Artificial Limb Centre, K.K. Nagar, Chennai, arrived at the central prison here this afternoon, to examine the People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Abdul Nasser Maudhany, for replacement of his artificial limb.

Mr. Maudhany, arrested in the serial blasts case, was examined in a separate room near the prison hospital. The team is likely to study his condition and finalise the date for fixing the limb. He had earlier moved the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases and the High Court, seeking that he be shifted to a private hospital in Kerala for replacement of the limb, which he said, "was long overdue".

`Cancel Reliance licence'

CHENNAI NOV. 27. A conference organised by the National Federation of Telecom Employees Chennai Telephones Cirlce Union here today demanded cancellation of licence granted to Reliance Infocom, a private company.

Speakers charged that the private company with having illegally converted international calls into local calls, thereby avoiding the payment of inter-connect charges due to the BSNL and MTNL. O.P. Gupta, Secretary- General, said the union would launch trade union action until it achieved the goal.

Village-on-wheels for Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI NOV. 27 . The Centre's Village-on-Wheels project is meant for the common man, unlike the Palace-on-Wheels which catered only for the rich, the Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, said today.

Speaking at the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Chamber of Commerce here, he said that in due course, a Village-on-Wheels project would be worked out for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

The chambers of commerce and industries must come up with constructive suggestions for the Government to formulate people-oriented policies. The Centre would consider the trade bodies' plea for a rail link from Puthur to the Ennore port, and a small port in the Nellore area of Andhra Pradesh, he said.

The Union Minister of State for Finance (Revenue), S.S. Palanimanickam, said independent India achieved green revolution but lagged on the industrial front. However, it was a force to reckon with in Information Technology, thanks to our students' excellence in English. The Chamber president, S. Santhanam, recalled the role of the forum in historic developments, and said almost all top leaders from the region had associated themselves with the affairs of the Chamber. Nalli Kuppusamy Chetti, diamond jubilee celebrations committee chairman, said dedication and hard work would bring success to entrepreneurs. A 260-page souvenir was also released.

Warning on use of ISI brand

CHENNAI NOV. 27 . The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted raids on manufacturing/trading units across the country recently and detected 26 instances of units using the ISI brand without licence from the BIS.

The Chief Vigilance Officer, Anant Dhul, said one raid was conducted on the premises of a packaged drinking water unit near here. It was found to be in violation of BIS rules. As many as 13 such raids were conducted in Maharastra; three in Orissa; two each in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab and one each in Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi.

Last year, the Government brought 15 items, including cables, electrical switches, energy meters and electrical irons, under compulsory certification.

The BIS has warned that action will be taken against those who manufacture items and misuse the ISI mark without valid licence and has appealed to the people to give information about any misuse of the ISI mark to the nearest office. The complaints could also be e-mailed to enf@bis.org.in

Review of CISF unit

Tuticorin Nov.27. V. Kamaraja, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (South Zone), Central Industrial Security Force, today visited the CISF unit stationed at the Port Trust here and reviewed the unit's performance during the year.

CISF sources said the DIG inspected a guard of honour and analysed the overall performance of the 210-men force. The CISF has been entrusted with security duty at the port since 1971.

Forum meet

on Dec.2

TIRUNELVELI NOV.27. The Consumer Redressal Fourm of the Tirunelveli Electricity Distribution Circle will meet at Maharaja Nagar on December 2.

According to an official statement, the forum, to be chaired by the Superintending Engineer (Distribution), would meet at the Office of the Superintending Engineer (Distribution), Anna Building, Maharaja Nagar at 11 a.m.

Consumers could air their grievances at the meeting, the statement said.

`NCC Day' today

MADURAI NOV.27. The NCC Day will be celebrated tomorrow with several units in schools and colleges by organising blood donation camps and cultural programmes, according to a release from the NSS Group Headquarters here.

The blood donation camp will be held on the Madurai Medical College campus where the 2(TN) Medical Company of the NCC is located. A guard of honour and cultural programmes will take place at Thiagarajar College. The NCC Group Commander, Col. Rajan Kulkarni, will inaugurate the camp in which cadets from schools and colleges will participate. The theme of cultural programme is national integration. There are 13 NCC units in Madurai, which is one of the largest in the country with 23,824 cadets.

Two arrested

for eve-teasing

Ramanathapuram Nov.27. The police today arrested two youths on a charge of eve-teasing.

According to sources, when Sundari (17), daughter of Sundaram of Keezhakarai, near here, was going home, Lakshmikanthan (19) son of Alagarsamy and Raju (19) son of Karuppaiah of same area allegedly made comments on her.

Escapes

SALEM NOV. 27. A woman remand prisoner, who was arrested in a case under the Immoral Traffic Act, escaped from the home in which she was interned here on Friday.

According to the police, Shanthi (24) was arrested on charges of indulging in immoral activities a few days back was detained in the Government Home for Women at Asthampatti here. On Saturday, she fled the Home.

Suicide

SALEM NOV. 27. A woman reportedly killed her eight-month-old son and committed suicide at Thathagapatti here on Friday. The police said that Shaji (25), wife of Chandran (35), used to quarrel frequently. On Friday, a frustrated Shaji allegedly poisoned her son Narayanan and later committed suicide by consuming it. The Annathanapatti Police seized four letters and a bottle of poison. .

Various Tamil scholars, poets and essayists took part in the seminar on the `Integration through language', organised here recently by the Department of Tamil Development, as a part of its National Integration Week celebrations. Presided over by the industrialist Selvamaligai S. Manickam, the forum discussed the importance of integration.
