Back `Cotton mill workers facing hardships'

COTTON spinning mills workers around Madurai and the southern districts are in dire straits, the National Textile Workers Union affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress has claimed.

The General Secretary of the Union, Mr K.S. Govindarajan, told presspersons here recently that an accord entered into earlier has not been revised even after five years. Mill workers are not paid even the minimum wages. Several mills have closed owing to financial losses.

The sick units can be revived if the Government offers sops to repay loans and power tariff, he said.

A conference is to be held on December 25 to highlight the problems of workers and make suitable suggestions to the Government, he added.
