One killed in grenade attack; tragedy averted

GUWAHATI, DEC. 16. One person was killed and five others wereinjured when suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) members lobbed a grenade in the busy Paltanabazar market area here this evening while an alert trackman of the Northeast Frontier Railway averted a major tragedy by detecting a five-kg wired explosive device planted on the track in central Assam's Nagaon district.

The condition of two of the injured, four of whom were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), is stated to be serious.

The injured included four daily wage earners, a pull cart driver and a passer-by.

On the recovery of the explosive, the Chief Public Relations Officer, Trikalagya Rabha, told The Hindu that Purnakanta Bora detected the device between Kampur and Laopani section of the track, about 112 km off Guwahati around 1.30 p.m., and averted a major blast on a goods train carrying high speed diesel.
