MG varsity wins overall title

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 1. Favourites Mahatma Gandhi University had a rich haul of 27 medals, including 15 golds and six silvers, and scored 117 points with its athletes M.B. Shinimol and C.A. Manjusha eclipsing meet records in the heptathlon and the five km walk on the concluding day of the 65th All-India inter-varsity athletics meet here this evening.

While Shinimol rewrote the 10-year-old record in the name of Bangalore's B.N. Sumavathi(4742 points) by compiling 4812 points in the heptathlon, Manjusha erased the feat of Manipur's Rohi Bala Devi (24.53.9 min), by clocking 24.18.70 in the five km walk. Jishi Joseph (half-marathon -1:29.25), Ahammed Kabeer (200m - 22.05) and the women's 4 x 400m relay team (3:50.22) accounted for the golds won by the Kottayam-based University today.

Madras (20 points) in the men's section and Punjab (30 points) in the women's section finished behind Mahatma Gandhi, whose women accounted for 82 points.

In the 4 x 400m relay for men, Calicut won gold, clocking 3:17.94 followed by Mahatma Gandhi (3:18.09) and Barkatula (3:19.31).
