Mixed bag for Chennai

RAMANATHAPURAM, JAN. 2. Chennai teams had mixed fortunes in the 50th Tamil Nadu State senior inter-district ball badminton championship at the LNB playground, Ilayankudi, near here on Sunday.

Chennai men's `A' team toppled the defending champion Coimbatore `A' 29-23, 29-25 to claim the men's title while Chennai women's `A' team, which toppled the defending champion Coimbatore `A' in the semifinals, lost to Salem `A' 16-29, 15-29 in the final.

Mr. Haji Habib, industrialist, gave away the prizes.

The results: Men (final): Chennai `A' bt Coimbatore `A' 29-23, 29-25.

Semifinals: Chennai `A' bt Vellore `A' 29-11, 29-9; Coimbatore `A' bt Tiruvallur `B' 29-23, 29-11. Quarterfinals: Vellore `A' bt Cuddalore 29-28, 29-11.

Women (final): Salem `A' bt Chennai `A' 29-16, 29-15.

Semifinals: Salem `A' bt Tiruvallur `A' 29-7, 29-12; Chennai `A' bt Coimbatore `A' 29-26, 29-15.

Quarterfinals: Salem `A' bt Coimbatore `B' 29-12, 29-5; Tiruvallur `A' bt Madurai 29-19, 28-29, 29-18; Chennai `A' bt Cuddalore 29-18, 29-16; Coimbatore `A' bt Tiruvallur `B' 29-11, 29-20.
