THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A national testing centre for ensuring the quality of medical equipment will soon be set up at the bio-medical engineering wing of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Science and Technology (SCTIMST) at Poojappura here.

Announcing this to newspersons, Dr K. Mohandas, Director of the institute, said that a Central Government grant of Rs 85 crore was being provided to the SCTIMST for the proposed quality control centre. This will be the first of its kind in South Asia, and will be equipped to pursue tissue and stem cell research.

The institute is developing a new model of heart valve using titanium that will be MRI scan-compatible as well. The valve will be marketed after extensive clinical trials, Dr Mohandas said. The institute had recently secured ISO 17025 certification.
